Job Title:  Assistant Prosecuting Attorney

Salary:  $75,000 – $92,000, plus benefits and annual step increases

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is dedicated to upholding justice and protecting the community.  The Screening Unit is responsible for determining whether a person should be charged with a crime and the appropriate charge to levy.  This is the first and one of the most important steps in the criminal justice system, requiring the warrant attorney to review the reports submitted by law enforcement, including the detention, seizure and interrogation reports and speak with witnesses and victims when necessary.  Careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case is critical in safeguarding the freedoms our constitution guarantees.

COMPENSATION:  Compensation is commensurate with experience.  Full medical benefits, as well as a retirement plan with robust time off, and paid parental leave, etc.  The salary range is $75,000 – $92,000 with an annual step increase, reimbursable mileage, parking, and commuter benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Juris Doctorate Degree; must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan; possess effective oral and written communication skills; highly organized and extremely motivated.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Review and analyze warrant applications submitted by law enforcement.
  • Determine the sufficiency of evidence and legal basis for warrant requests.
  • Conduct legal research to support warrant decisions.
  • Communicate with law enforcement officers to gather additional information.
  • Prepare written recommendations for prosecutors regarding approval or denial.
  • Assist in training law enforcement officers on warrant requirements and best practices.
  • Review search warrants submitted for legal sufficiency prior to submission to the Court.
  • Negotiate fair and just resolutions of cases with defense counsels.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
