Assistant Prosecuting Attorney- Jackson County
The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney (APA). Successful candidates must be licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan and have two to three years' experience in a criminal and/or civil law setting. The Prosecutor's office is staffed with Attorney's classified levels I through IV. This position is an APA-I, working under the supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney or Chief Assistant.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney and the Chief Assistant, reviews and authorizes requests for felony and misdemeanor warrants, juvenile criminal petitions, educational neglect petitions, mental health petitions, and abuse and neglect petitions. Determines the appropriate charge and prosecutes criminal cases. Regularly presents felony and misdemeanor cases in the district court and may assist with other matters as assigned. Attempts to resolve and dispose of criminal cases or tries case in court. Prepares and tries felony preliminary examinations. Prepares and tries misdemeanors at jury and bench trials. Prepares and tries criminal felony jury trials in Circuit Court. Prepares and tries civil abuse and neglect hearings, bench trials, and jury trials.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED:
Education: Juris Doctorate. Law degree from an accredited law school.
Experience: Prefer some experience in a criminal and/or civil law setting.
Other Requirements: Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan.
Relevant Skills/Specialized Equipment Knowledge:
• Basic office equipment such as telephone, calculator, photocopier, Fax, etc.
• Photographic, audio and video equipment.
• Computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, database entry, and desktop publishing.
• Ability to use Exhibit View and Camtasia equipment.
• Ability to use technology needed for trials, motions and other hearings.
Salary: $66,409 - $77,091
SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE; BENEFITS EFFECTIVE DATE OF HIRE
