DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Tribal Prosecutor, will perform work of complex difficulty involving the prosecution of all domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking cases in Tribal Court, providing information and guidance to police officers in the areas of proper law and procedure, and will aid in the creation of an education program for tribal and local police officers regarding the effective investigation of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking cases involving Native Americans. Additionally, the Assistant Prosecutor will aid in the prosecution of other cases in the Tribal Court and have the opportunity to engage in child welfare cases in the Tribal and State Courts. This is a partially grant funded position and will be for an initial term of one (1) year, starting October 1, 2020. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Vertical prosecution of all domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking cases in Tribal Court
  • Collaborate with Tribal victim advocate and domestic violence victim advocate to provide empowerment for victims and effective witness management
  • Vertical or collaborative prosecution of other criminal cases on behalf of the Tribal Prosecutor
  • Provide call coverage for prosecutor’s office to provide information and guidance to tribal police officers
  • Attend, at minimum, bi-monthly education related to the investigation or prosecution of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking
  • Collaborate with tribal police officer to create education program for tribal and local police regarding domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking involving Native Americans
  • Collaborate with Tribal Prosecutor to codify Tribal Victim’s Rights
  • Provide guidance and support for creation of Batterer’s Intervention Program

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited law school

  • Must be able to practice in the Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Court
  • Pass criminal background check and not be excluded from working with Indian Children Willing to be on call
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to analyze questions and scenarios quickly and be able to provide reasonable legal answers while under stress

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bar membership in any state
  • Experience prosecuting in Indian Country
  • Experience prosecuting domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking cases
  • Knowledge of Lac Vieux Desert tribal traditions and customs
  • Education regarding prosecution of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking cases in Indian Country
  • Willing to work evenings, weekends or holidays as needed
