Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney and the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, participates in the processing of more complex complaints from various police agencies and prosecutes all phases of criminal trials, felony trials, motions, hearing and appeals in Circuit Court. Regularly presents cases in the district court and may assist with other matters as assigned. Attempts to resolve and dispose of criminal cases or tries case in court. Prepares and tries misdemeanors at jury and bench trials. On occasion, prepares and tries criminal felony matters in Circuit Court.

1. Prosecutes all phases of criminal and civil trials, jury or non-jury, motions, appeals, and/or hearings in Circuit Court, District Court, and Probate Court.
2. Participates in the day-to-day tasks of reviewing police reports, warrant screening, drafting of search warrants, petitions, and other legal documents, and provides specialized information and advice to various police agencies.
3. Reviews and collaborates on the investigations of law enforcement, applicable internal departments, and office staff.

4. Initiates actions and provides guidance to the police, other governmental agencies, and the support personnel in the investigation of complaints.
5. Participates in developing and implementing policies and procedures for groups related to the criminal justice system.
6. Prepares for litigation proceedings, which includes: researching the law; writing and preparing briefs, motions and directives; conversing with and preparing witnesses to give testimony; negotiating case resolutions with attorneys; preparing and implementing case strategies; and, performing related activities.
7. Presents and argues cases to juries, judges, and other fact finders.
8. Provides legal advice and consultation to other attorneys, law enforcement, internal staff and citizens.
9. Services generally as a felony trial attorney, or services as the principal attorney in specific field such as child support enforcement, child abuse and neglect, juvenile division of the Family Court, narcotics or other specialized are.
10. Has expertise in one or more areas of law as deemed necessary by the Prosecuting Attorney.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
• Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
• Two to four years of experience as a prosecuting attorney.
• Member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan is required.
• Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance and must maintain eligibility to drive per the County’s Vehicle Policy. Required to serve in an “on-call” capacity and may work irregular hours.
• Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios etc. Ability to comprehend, process, and apply both verbal and written skills appropriate to the job.

• Specialized knowledge of Probate, District and Circuit Court procedures.
• Knowledge and ability to use a personal computer to prepare reports, maintain records, search for and compile date. Ability to use County resources and facilitate meetings effectively and efficiently.
• Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with customers, co-workers, and representatives of other agencies.
• Skill in researching and resolving problems in order to ensure compliance.
• Ability to interpret and explain complex policies, processes, regulation and applicable laws in layman’s terms.
• Ability to recognize case-specific and systemic problems. Provide expedited legal guidance under exigent circumstances. Consistently demonstrate sound ethics, think analytically and apply sound judgment, solve problems, make effective decisions and act with integrity.
• Ability to accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files. Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries.
• Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications, database entry and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position.
