Assistant Prosecuting Attorney III - Wayne County

GENERAL SUMMARY:

This is a grant funded position pursuant to the Prosecuting Cold Cases Using DNA Project. 

The Assistant Prosecuting Attorney III will review and authorize warrant requests and prosecute cases involving violent crime where the suspect has been identified through DNA evidence between 2015 and 2017. The APA will work closely with the Detroit Police Department Homicide and Inactive Squad officers Qualified candidates will have experience in prosecuting complex and difficult cases, particularly homicide and DNA cases. 

QUALIFICATIONS:   Juris Doctorate Degree; must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan; at least 3-5 years of experience in vertically prosecuting, handling homicide and DNA cases.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:  Interview law enforcement officers requesting warrants.

Analyze forensic reports, police reports, case investigations, laboratory reports, witness statements and identification records. Interview witnesses, issue investigative subpoenas and conduct hearings; request further investigation when necessary.

Handle assignments in all courts which include: Circuit, District, Juvenile and Probate.  Prepare for trials and court proceeding.  Draft briefs and legal memoranda. Conduct complex felony trials, preliminary examinations, pretrials and evidentiary hearings.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
