Job Description for Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II ($61,869- $82,910) in the Family Division:
Duties: In the Family Division with 3 other attorneys under the supervision of the County’s Prosecuting Attorney, assists in prosecuting juvenile delinquency and represents the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in civil child protection cases on behalf of the County. Reviews police reports from local law enforcement agencies in order to authorize juvenile petitions or return juvenile petitions to agencies for further investigation. Attends all court hearings relating to any petition that is formally filed with the court including arraignments, dispositions, and review hearings. Consider appropriate juvenile cases for adult treatment and prepare and present such cases. Prepares witnesses and compiles all necessary exhibits that are paramount to presenting the prosecution’s case at either a bench trial or jury trial. Attends the Child Advocacy Center to observe interviews relating to children who are alleged to be victims of physical and/or sexual abuse; interprets and advises police agencies regarding criminal statutes. Prepares probate court petitions and petitions for mental health treatment and attends all hearings relating to the petitions that are filed.
Represents DHHS in child protective proceedings; prepares and files child protective proceeding petitions; consults and advises DHHS on a range of issues. Attends team meetings and mediations relating to petitions that have been filed for DHHS with the court. Prepare for and put on trainings for staff of DHHS. Attends hearings relating to petitions filed with the court including preliminary hearings, trials, dispositions and termination hearings.
Exercises a considerable degree of independent judgment throughout each stage of the legal process. Completes special projects and assignments as requested. Experience: A minimum of five years paid, full-time previous civil, criminal, appellate or probate legal counseling experience is required. Candidates with no prior experience or less than five years of experience may qualify for Assistant Prosecuting Attorney I position. ($56,245 - $75,374).
