Chief Assistant Prosecutor- Calhoun County

Under the general direction of the Prosecutor, assists in the criminal law. Duties include, but are not limited to, providing legal opinions, supervising assistant prosecutors, and participating in the prosecution of criminal cases.

1. Performs several personnel-related functions, including but not limited to, supervising support staff in the absence of the Office Administrator, supervising assistant prosecutors, interviewing candidates for employment, and handling disciplinary issues.
2. Performs a variety of office administration duties including but not limited to, scheduling court appearances, conducting staff meetings, and assessing and assigning cases to the assistant prosecutors.
3. Participates in the prosecution of criminal cases and prepares necessary associated legal documents. Appears and represents the People at hearings, motions, and trials
4. Reviews authorization/denials of warrant requests when appealed by Police Departments and decides on the authorization of criminal charges.
5. Provides legal opinions and training for the Assistant Prosecutors and Police Departments through regular meetings with Department heads and assistant prosecutors.
6. Serves as a liaison between the Prosecutor's office and the public, private and public agencies, and criminal justice organizations.
7. Serves in role of Prosecutor in incumbent's absence.

1. The job requires possession of a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Must be a member in good standing of the State Bar Association of Michigan.
2. Six to eight years of experience in criminal justice.
3. Management skills necessary to coordinate, provide leadership and review the work of assigned staff.
4. Interpersonal skills necessary to manage the activities of a diverse group of employees and to work productively with all levels of County personnel and the public. Incumbent must be able to effectively communicate in situations requiring tact and patience.
5. Mental ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent disruptions due to people and/or telephone calls. Incumbent must also handle periodic intermittent or cyclical work pressures.
6. Physical ability to occasionally sit in the same position for extended periods of time.

1. Normal office environment with little, if any, discomfort due to heat, dusts, noise and the like.
2. Extended work days (beyond 8 hours/day) are frequently required and expected.
3. On-call availability to handle work problems, attend meetings, handle emergencies/crisis situations, etc. at all hours is frequently required.
