HOURS:  Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY: The Law Clerk works closely with judicial officers to review court files, conduct legal research, write memoranda, and prepare judicial decisions. The position is an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates interested in state courts, trial court advocacy, civil litigation, and criminal law.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

The Law Clerk is responsible for reviewing case files, identifying pertinent factual and legal issues, conducting independent legal research, and preparing legal memoranda and draft judicial decisions. During jury trials, the Law Clerk may serve as a sworn jury bailiff. Other duties may be required. The Law Clerk must be able to maintain complete confidentiality in case-related matters and abide by the Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trial Court Employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must possess a juris doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and must have either sat for the most recent bar exam or plan to sit for the next available bar exam. Applicants who are already licensed to practice law in Michigan are also encouraged to apply.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must complete a county application form and submit a letter of interest, resume, writing sample, and law school transcript. Employment is dependent on a criminal background check and drug screen. By statute, the Law Clerk serves a one-year term that may be extended for a second one-year term. MCL 600.1471.

Reports To:                   The Law Clerk is an at-will position that reports to the Circuit Court Research Attorney and receives day-to-day direction from the circuit and probate court judges.

WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed primarily in an office environment and involves prolonged sitting and standing. Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing five to twenty-five pounds.
