Congratulations to Wayne County Prosecutor, Kym Worthy, for being selected as one of eight officials nationwide as a 2015 Public Official of the Year by GOVERNING Magazine.  On top of carrying the caseload for the city of Detroit and prosecuting some of the most high-profile cases in the country, Prosecutor Worthy has spearheaded efforts in Michigan and across the nation to get backlogged sexual assault kits tested.

In 2009, more than 11,000 untested sexual assault kits were discovered in a Detroit police storage facility.  Prosecutor Worthy immediately got to work lobbying the state Legislature and Congress to appropriate funding and raising awareness for the testing, investigation and prosecutions of these cases.  She has also directed legislation to set up a chain of command for the testing of sexual assault kits to make sure something like this never happens again. Since February of 2015, every new sexual assault kit has been tracked.

GOVERNING honors state and local government officials across the country for outstanding achievements.  Elected, appointed and career officials from any branch of state or local government are eligible.  Nominations come from readers who submit names of those that have had a remarkable positive impact on their department or agency, community or state.  Prosecutor Worthy was one of eight honorees selected as a top Public Official of the Year.  GOVERNING typically receives several hundred nominations every year for this award.

Prosecutor Worthy served as PAAM's President from August 2013 - August 2014.  You can see GOVERNING’s article on her selection, here
